Cars Pixar -ify Vehicle Pixar Style

Even though Cars isn’t the most popular Pixar film, the characters are some of the most recognisable. I am sure we have all seen the films and know the premise of it. The world is made of cars; cars with eyes and mouths. So today I will show you how you can make your vehicle, whether a car, truck, bike, or even plane, look like it belongs to the Pixar universe.

First open up a picture of a car you want to turn into a Pixar character.

Make sure the image is on a separate layer, and the background layer is transparent.

Next select the area of the windscreen using the Quick Selection Tool (W). I find this tool the easiest to select a particular space. You must click and drag the tool over the windscreen to add to the selection. If you have included too much in the selection, just hold down alt to deselect a particular part.

Now delete the windscreen selection. No go to the gradient editor and create a gradient similar to the one pictured. Grey to White then back to Grey will work. Try to slant the gradient to the windscreen’s curve.

We now need to create a new layer on top of the other two. You can do this by going to Layer>New>Layer.

Using the Polygonal Lasso Tool (L) create an outline for the eyebrows. I got the curves by creating the points of the lasso close together. Try to give the eyebrows expression.

With the eyebrows selected, we can go again to the gradient editor. If you click one of the colours in the gradient you should bring up an eye dropper. With the eye dropper select the lightest and darkest colours from the shine on the vehicle. Don’t worry if the colours don’t match exactly. All we need to do is make them look similar. Again, try to slant the gradient relative to the bend in the windscreen.

While still on the eyebrow layer, go to Layer>Layer Style>Drop Shadow.

Add a drop shadow to the eyebrows. The settings with the best effects are Angle 90, Distance 20 px, Spread 0%, and Size 5 px. This should give a convincing shadow under the eyebrows.

Next, select the entire windscreen from the image layer and copy it onto a new layer above all the other layers.

Once this is done, use the eraser tool to rub away the area with the eyebrows. I find this gives a better finish as it looks like the eyebrows fit within the windscreen.

Copy and paste this image of an average Pixar style eye into your image twice. I added the extra white circle. You can do this too, by using the ellipse tool (U) and the colour white.

Move the eyes to the windscreen.

I decided to sink the yes lower into the bonnet. At the moment, the eye is overlapping the edge. Using the Polygonal Lasso Tool (W) highlight the overlapping area and delete it on both eyes.

On a new layer, again using the Polygonal Lasso Tool (W), select a space on the front of the vehicle in the shape of a mouth. Then add a grey to white gradient to the selected area.

With the same tool, cut out a shape from the mouth and delete it.

Lastly, select the licence plate in the image layer and copy it to another layer. Make sure this new layer is ontop of all the others.

You should end up with something similar to this. I hope you like this tutorial and find a way to use this.Maybe you could customise a friends car for them. If you do end up trying this out feel free to share it in the comments.

Control Agario Keyboard

After getting my new laptop, I found it hard to play agario. The reason I found it hard was because of the trackpad instead of an actual mouse. This tutorial should solve that, as I show you how to control agario with your keyboard. Being able to use the keyboard is useful when you are using a laptop or if you are used to the arrow keys playing other games.

This will only work with Chrome at the moment, but lets be honest, who doesn’t have Chrome nowadays? We first need to download a Google Chrome extension named Agar.io Ninja. You can find Agar.io Ninja by clicking here.

Once you have installed the extension make sure it is enabled. Once you are sure it is working you can now get over to agar.io and play with your keyboard.

Control Agario Keyboard

Now you are ready to play you should notice one difference about the main menu. In the top left corner there is a switch that needs to be turned on before you can use the keyboard.

Control Agario Keyboard
Keyboard Switch

The controls are as follows:

Move – WASD or arrow keys

Split – O and left click

Shoot mass – P and right click

Enable / disable mouse – Space

Keyboard controls for the options:

M show mass

N no names

B dark theme

V no colors

C no skins

This is  great little app that can help you get all the way to the top. It has certainly helped me as I am more used to the arrow keys. I hope this tutorial showed you how to control agario with your keyboard.

lego miniature SNES

After being inspired by this guy’s amazingly cool miniature Lego NES, I decided to try my hand at a miniature SNES.

Office-Supplies

Today’s post comes out of my boredom while working today. I managed to make a really good paper helicopter out of the stationery dotted around the counter. This helicopter will spin down, must like a sycamore seed, when it is thrown. You can build this if you get bored at school or at work. This is how I built it.

All you will need is:

A Post It Note

A Paper-clip

Scissors

How to make a paper helicopter out of office supplies

First of all fold the post it note in half.

Now cut along the folded line on the post it note.

You must now cut three equal tabs half way along the length of one half of the post it note.

How to make a paper helicopter out of office supplies

Just like this picture.

You must now fold the tab on the right down, and then turn it over and fold down the left tab on the other side. This should leave you with one tab folded down on one side and the other tab folded down on the other side.

Now use your scissors to cut off the unwanted tab in the middle.

Now fold the paper lengthways so that it forms a lightning bolt shape in the centre and then flatten it out.

Lastly you can place the paperclip on the bottom of the helicopter. Make sure it is centred and holding the centre fold closed.

Now you are ready to test it. I recommend to throw it by holding the bottom and throwing it like a ball overarm. You should get the hang of getting the best amount of spin on the way down.

Adobe Illustrator Sticker Effect Tutorial

This tutorial should show you how to create a sticker in Adobe Illustrator. The sticker effect is being used more and more in logos and badges, and used in Web 2.0 designs. It is simple to complete if you just follow the directions:

Sticker Effect in Adobe Illustrator 1
Start with the items you want to turn into a sticker.
Sticker Effect in Adobe Illustrator
So you can see the effect once it is applied, I like to add a rectangle behind the design. Once this is completed copy your design and paste it in front.
Sticker Effect in Adobe Illustrator
Change the stroke weight on the new copy on top to around 40 (or whatever works for you) and change the colour to white. Then change the join from Miter to Round. All this does is change the corners from angles to curves.
Now select the design with the white stroke and go to the Object Tab and click Expand.
Now select the design with the white stroke and go to the Object Tab and click Expand.

Leave all the boxes ticked and press OK.
Sticker Effect Tutorial
Keep the same design selected and press go to Object > Expand again.
Sticker Effect Tutorial
When the window appears the last two boxes should be ticked. Leave these ticked and press Ok.
Sticker Effect Tutorial
With the same design selected you can now use the Unite button to create one solid shape. Once this is completed, move the white object behind the original design.
Sticker Effect Tutorial
Next select the white object, copy, and then paste in front. This time add a simple white to black gradient using the gradients menu.
Sticker Effect Tutorial
This is just down to preference, but I change the opacity of the white of the gradient to 10%.
Sticker Effect Tutorial
While I change the black to an opacity of 20% so it adds a sheen to the sticker.

After playing around with the colour of the design and the background you end up with a pleasing sticker effect on Adobe Illustrator.
Windows-10-Cortana-2

I recently have upgraded to Windows 10 from Windows 8 so I thought I would write down some of the things that I have been having trouble with and how to solve them. So keep your eyes peeled over the next month or two as I write about some of the problems I am faced with in Windows 10. Cortana has been around for awhile now but only on phones; now she is available on Windows 10 systems too. For all those upgrading their operating system to Windows 10 here are 3 tips for improving Cortana.

Say “Hey Cortana”

You can turn on a setting that makes it so you can use Cortana by saying “Hey Cortana.” This is helpful when you are sick of typing or are in a programme and can’t get out to click the mic icon.

Open Up Cortana

Set Default Programmes

When you get Cortana you will find that many of the operations you ask of her will take you to programmes you don’t use or don’t want to use. For example when you search it uses Edge by default whereas most normal people would want it to use Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox. You can change the default programmes used by Cortana by following these instructions.

Boosting Your Microphone

One thing I found extremely annoying when I first started using Cortana was that she couldn’t hear any of my queries. Because my microphone on my laptop was not made for Cortana, it was pretty muted and made it hard for the computer to hear me. The best way of improving this is to boost your microphone.
