How To Create A Sticker Effect In Adobe Illustrator

This tutorial should show you how to create a sticker in Adobe Illustrator. The sticker effect is being used more and more in logos and badges, and used in Web 2.0 designs. It is simple to complete if you just follow the directions:

Start with the items you want to turn into a sticker.

So you can see the effect once it is applied, I like to add a rectangle behind the design. Once this is completed copy your design and paste it in front.

Change the stroke weight on the new copy on top to around 40 (or whatever works for you) and change the colour to white. Then change the join from Miter to Round. All this does is change the corners from angles to curves.
Now select the design with the white stroke and go to the Object Tab and click Expand.

Leave all the boxes ticked and press OK.

Keep the same design selected and press go to Object > Expand again.

When the window appears the last two boxes should be ticked. Leave these ticked and press Ok.

With the same design selected you can now use the Unite button to create one solid shape. Once this is completed, move the white object behind the original design.

Next select the white object, copy, and then paste in front. This time add a simple white to black gradient using the gradients menu.

This is just down to preference, but I change the opacity of the white of the gradient to 10%.

While I change the black to an opacity of 20% so it adds a sheen to the sticker.

After playing around with the colour of the design and the background you end up with a pleasing sticker effect on Adobe Illustrator.
